How to Care for Printed T-Shirts So They Last for Years
5 min read
A custom t-shirt is an investment in something you love wearing — so it's worth keeping it looking fresh. The good news: direct-to-garment prints are durable because the ink bonds into the cotton fibers. A few simple habits will keep your design vibrant and your shirt soft for years.
Washing: gentle and inside-out
- -Turn the shirt inside out to protect the print from friction.
- -Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle — heat is the enemy of prints.
- -Use a mild detergent and skip the bleach and fabric softener.
- -Wash with similar colors and avoid overloading the machine.
Drying: air-dry when you can
High heat causes shrinking and can stress the print over time. Air-drying is gentlest and keeps the fit and color their best. If you must use a dryer, choose low or tumble-dry and remove the shirt while it's still slightly damp.
Ironing and steaming
Never iron directly on the design. If you need to press the shirt, turn it inside out and iron the back of the print, or use a cloth between the iron and the fabric. A steamer is a safe, print-friendly alternative.
Storage
- -Fold rather than hang heavy prints to avoid stretching.
- -Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- -Make sure the shirt is fully dry before folding to prevent mustiness.
Why DTG prints hold up
Because direct-to-garment ink soaks into the fabric instead of sitting on top like vinyl, it won't crack or peel. Treat the shirt gently — cold wash, low heat — and the design will stay sharp and colorful far longer than a typical printed tee.
